The English tabloids may think that you are a Tukker already, listening to your new adopted accent, but we think you’re only halfway there.
At the end of this course, Tukker ABC: Steve McClarens guide to becoming a real Tukker, you will never want to leave the region of Twente again.
In this fifth lesson, everything you must know about Epy Drost.
Steve, in today’s edition we present you the biggest legend in FC Twente history. Off course you already spotted his typical moustached face high above in the Grolsch Veste and wondered who this man is. Eimert (Epy) Drost was born on 21st September 1945 and sadly died, far too young, on 27th May 1995. In total he played 704 matches in Dutch professional soccer, 548 (!) of which for FC Twente. Epy Drost got his nickname ‘Manolito’, because of his resemblance with some actor in a television western, with whom he shared his looks and a free-living lifestyle. Drost was also known and loved for his loyalty to FC Twente, his personality on and of the pitch and his fabulous shooting qualities (see the video below for his famous goal in the Dutch Cup final in 1977). Further more he frequently tricked opponents in his own box. Epy Drost only played 9 matches for the Dutch national team. An argument with national team manager Frantisek Fadrhonc was one of the reasons for this. Epy Drost missed the 1974 World Championship because of a serious injury. Finally, let’s cite Dutch journalist Bert Nederlof, who finished an unique biography of Drost in 2008: “Epy Drost was different in everything”.
Volgende keer de letter F. Maar over welk gebruik, wetenswaardigheid in de regio of voetbal-icoon moet Steve dan bijgepraat worden? Laat het weten in de comments.
